The Q2 WEEE collection data published by the EA has indicated a potentail target shortfall of over 60,000 tonnes this year.
As can be seen from 2018, the tonnage does not ramp up in the second half of the year, so it could be that we will fall even further behind as the year progresses.
The Compliance Fee has been used to fund a range of projects, but there is no sign that it is helping to increase collection. The problem for this year is that it looks as though the UK will fail to meet the EU collection target of 65% taking into account ‘substantiated estimates’ and B2B collections.
WEEE collections have remained at around 40% since the regulations have begun and this must surely raise questions as to whether the Regulations are doing enough for recycling collection growth?
